---- Chapter 6 I swallowed my tears and struggled to drag my legs, which ached deep into the bone. From the drawer, I pulled out the divorce papers I had prepared long ago. Beside them was the medical report detailing the injuries I suffered eight years ago while saving someone in Tazharan. I placed them all in plain sight, alongside a voice recorder. As I clung to the windowsill, I struggled to pull myself up. Below the villa, the sea restlessly surged.
Not far off, a small, inconspicuous boat had quietly drifted near. Just then, Maverick's message flashed on my phone. "Have you realized your mistake yet? Just come over and apologize to Yana. She's willing to forgive you. "T've already spoken up for you. Don't make this harder than it has to be. Just be reasonable, okay?" I replied, "My biggest mistake was saving a man one night eight years ago in Tazharan Harbor.
He'd been dressed in black and had gotten stabbed eight times." Then, I tossed the phone aside and leaped into the sea. ---- Immediately after, the phone on the floor suddenly began vibrating wildly. Back in the ward, Maverick had just glanced at the message when Yana abruptly grabbed the phone from him. "Mavie, my stomach hurts so bad. Could you make me some hibiscus tea?" Maverick frowned. There was a hint of impatience in his voice as he said, "I think it's a message from Constance.

Let me see it first." Yana handed the phone back with a sulky pout. " Mavie, Constance was always jealous because she knew how well you treated me. She used to talk trash about me behind my back all the time. "T know it wasn't easy for her when I married Julius, but honestly, she has no one to blame but herself. She dressed provocatively , attracted unwanted attention, and got herself into a mess. Then, she turned around and wanted me to end up the same.
"Tf she texts you saying I've been badmouthing her, I'll just take it. If it makes her feel better, so be it. Just please don't argue with her because of me." In the past, Maverick wouldn't have thought anything of such words. But the memory of the calm, unreadable look in my eyes when he'd left two days ago suddenly made his heart skip. He opened his mouth to argue, but he saw Yana turn ---- away with tears streaming down her face. Her hospital gown hung loose.
She'd left it open to show the crescent birthmark on her right shoulder . Instantly, his expression softened as he gently coaxed her, "Alright , alright , I won't look anymore. I'll go make you that hibiscus tea. Just lie down and rest, okay?" The moment Maverick left, Yana immediately checked his phone. When she saw the last message I had sent, her face darkened. She swiftly deleted it. However, just as she was about to exit, another message popped up. This time, it was a ransom. demand.
"Maverick , your pregnant wife is in my hands. Ten billion by 8:00 pm tonight, or you'll be picking up their bodies." The number was one Yana knew all too well from her years by Maverick's side. It belonged to his rival in the mafia, Silas Newman. She coldly sneered and quickly typed back. " Constance? That piece of trash isn't worth a dime. I'm sick of her. You can have her. And when you're done, just toss her body in the ocean for the fish.
I don't ---- want her anymore." Yana's lips twisted in smug satisfaction. The idea that I wouldn't make it through the night in Silas' hands brought her a sick kind of pleasure. If I died, the truth would die with me too. After all, she hadn't been the one to save Maverick eight years ago. She'd be free to keep up the act and enjoy all the benefits it brought her. At this thought, she hummed a cheerful tune. Meanwhile, Maverick had left the ward to send someone to fetch the hibiscus tea.
But just then, he ran into a nurse on her rounds and impulsively grabbed her. "The patient is pregnant, and her stomach hurts. She wants hibiscus tea-go make her acup, quick!" The nurse stared at him in disbelief. Then she scolded , "Hibiscus tea promotes blood flow -it's a big no for pregnant women! How can you, a grown man, not know that? And if she really is pregnant, how does she not know? You'd think she'd have at least some basic common sense!" Maverick froze, a flicker of suspicion crossing his mind.
