---- Chapter 10 Ihad given Shawn many chances before. But all I had received in return was hurt and disdain. I didn't say anything except, "Do you deserve it?" Shawn opened his mouth, wanting to defend himself, but the words never came out. He knew exactly what he had done -and because of that, he couldn't even muster an excuse. Seeing that, I turned away.
Worried that he would follow me, I warned him, "If you don't want to spend the night at the police station, don't follow me." I thought he would finally stop looking for me after that. To my surprise, he appeared at my cafe again the next day. Roy was still with him. Thankfully, he arrived at the same time Brenda rushed in, travel-worn and exhausted. As soon as she saw Shawn, her expression turned cold. "Didn't I tell you to stop looking for Yvonne?
Why are you still pestering her?" "She's my wife. Why can't I look for her?" Shawn retorted. Brenda scoffed. "You're divorced," she reminded ---- him. "You signed the papers yourself. Do you need to see them again? Shawn, bea man. Take responsibility for your own actions and stop harassing Yvonne!" Her face was red with anger. She looked at him, the disappointment evident in her eyes. But Shawn remained stubborn. "I'm not leaving. Roy can't be without his mother." Brenda laughed.

She pointed at him with a shaky finger. "Who do you think drove his mother away? If you don't stop harassing Yvonne, I'll take Roy and stay with Yvonne. I'll make sure he grows up without his father!" Hearing this, I looked up sharply, staring at her in disbelief. Ihad once thought about raising Roy myself, but at the time, I hadn't had proper living arrangements . I hadn't been able to guarantee my own survival , let alone care for a child.
So, to ensure he had access to proper care and education, I had forced myself to leave him, refusing to even look at him. Shawn was so shocked by Brenda's words that he was speechless. Brenda scoffed. "Remember, Roy doesn't havea mother because of you. If you want to blame someone for that, you can only blame yourself ! Yvonne owes ---- you nothing -in fact, you owe her too much! If she decides to fight you for Roy's custody, you won't even stand a chance!" Then, she turned to me.
With a guilty look in her eyes, she said softly, "Yvonne, you're all alone here, so please take care of yourself. If you need any help, just call me. No matter what, I will always be your family." I forced out a smile and nodded lightly. "Okay." If Shawn hadn't appeared at my doorstep so suddenly , my connection to Brenda would've been severed long ago. Brenda, too, knew that I would never contact her again, so tears welled up in her eyes as she spoke. She looked at me sadly.
I looked back at her without saying anything. Shawn still refused to leave. In the end, Brenda had to push him out forcefully. I stood my ground, refusing to look at them. But as the door swung close behind them, I couldn't help but turn my head and look out the window-and at that moment, my eyes met Roy's, bright with laughter. I couldn't hold it in any longer. Tears spilled from my eyes as I sobbed silently. "Phoebe, what's wrong?" ---- I raised my hand and wiped away my tears.
"Dust got into my eyes. It's nothing." After that, I started receiving photos of Roy. He was crying in some, laughing in others, and pouting in anger in the rest. Brenda was the one who sent me those photos. She also sent me a voice message, saying, "No matter where you are, you will always be Roy's mother." I didn't reply to her texts, but I looked at the photos over and over again. No matter how much I missed him, I could only keep it to myself. Because I knew-I couldn't go back.
I felt sorry for Roy for having such a selfish mother. In another life, I would have loved him with all my heart.
