---- Chapter 15 Epilogue 2 Eugenia was laboring in prison when a sudden downpour hit. Lightning flashed, and thunder rumbled . A few inmates paused , glancing up at the storm outside. Eugenia paused what she was doing, lifted her head, and quietly watched the rain. Her mind wandered as she reflected upon her entire life. She was the most well-known daughter of the Ottley family, having earned her place at the top alone.
Jacob was known for his womanizing, fathering countless illegitimate children. Eugenia was just another daughter born out of wedlock, never receiving any love from her parents. Jacob had so many children that he could hardly remember her. Her mother, Penelope Clemons, had wanted a son more than anything, but she ended up with two daughters instead . Being the younger one, Eugenia could always see the resentment on Penelope's face.
Penelope would always say, "I never would've kept you if the doctor hadn't told me that aborting you would mean I couldn't have more kids! Who told you ---- to come into my life? I wanted a son! A son!" Eventually , Jacob stopped visiting Penelope almost entirely , and she gave up on her dream of having a son. She directed all her anger at Eugenia. Desperate to escape such a life, Eugenia kept visiting the Ottley residence, hoping to find her father.
But all she got were taunts from the Ottleys. From then on, she promised herself that she'd rise above it all. The first person she met wasn't Vance. It was Rosalea. Eugenia had been getting picked on when Rosalea stepped in to defend her. The moment Eugenia laid eyes on Vance , she made him her target. Always sharp, she knew that he was the one who could help her break free from her past. So, she attached herself to him. Over time, people started calling her Vance's " childhood sweetheart".

But she wasn't satisfied following him around, especially after seeing how much he doted on Rosalea. Eugenia hated that Vance's love wasn't for her. Deep down, she envied Rosalea. No matter what Eugenia did, she couldn't make him love her instead. The turning point came when tragedy struck Augusta. After Valentin killed Augusta, Eugenia figured out how to use her death to her advantage. The audio recording was authentic, but the voice ---- wasn't Rosalea's.
It came from a professional impersonator that Eugenia had hired. Eugenia switched the background noise to something loud and distracting to make the imitation more convincing . She was confident that not even Vance , Norman, or Delia would realize that the voice didn't belong to Rosalea. Eventually, Eugenia pulled it off. Vance started seeing Rosalea as the enemy. Unable to take the pressure , Rosalea ran off.
For the next two years, Eugenia thought that this might finally be her chance to take Rosalea's place. But all she ever got from Vance was some half- hearted support. Looking back now, her life felt like a total failure. Then, out of nowhere, thunder cracked. Lightning lit up the sky, and Eugenia quietly slipped a sewing needle into her pocket. Later that night, she swallowed it in a suicide attempt and died in excruciating pain.
After her body was cremated, no one from the Ottleys came to pick up her ashes. In the end, her sister took them and dumped them in a drainage ditch. The filthy current swept them away as though she had never existed. ---- Ina small house somewhere, Delia's hair had turned white overnight. Every day, she'd sit in her chair and knit. She'd say, ''Rosalea is such a sweet soul, like an angel. She's scared of the cold, so I need to knit a ton of sweaters. I'll dress her up when she gets here.
She'll definitely look beautiful." Norman would go along with it. "Exactly. Rosalea's a sweetheart, but she might not like plain sweaters with no designs . You should try knitting some patterns . She loves roses. Maybe knit a few roses on them." Delia would snort and grab her reading glasses. "I'm learning, aren't I? Stop nagging me and go play your chess, you old geezer." Delia was ill and had forgotten a lot over the years. She held onto nothing but her memories of Rosalea from 16 years ago.
Wanting to keep her spirits up, Norman always went along with her delusions. Clyde married a nurse, and they had twins. His factory took off, and they never had to worry about money again, except for one thing. One person was absent, and that person would never return.
