Alex made sure that Ashly had the files she needed before she even asked for them. He offered Ashly coffee and food and tried to anticipate her every need. Ina dozen different ways, he tried desperately to placate Ashly. He even stooped to tie her shoelaces for her, which, of all things, was what finally made Ashly snap. He couldn't imagine what the employees must have thought , watching Ashly drag Alex into his office. If they said anything , Alex didn't hear them.

All of his focus was on Ashly's hand wrapped around his wrist. Her grip was tight enough that the coils of Alex's bracelet dug into his skin, but it still felt like he let go too soon. I did the same thing to you three months ago, so we're even now, Alex," Ashly interrupted. Alex winced, and shame curled in his stomach. "Then tell me what to do to make it better," he said. "Tell me how to fix this.

I'll do anything." There was so much tension in Alex's shoulders that he was shaking with it. Alex thought that surely Ashly was about to tell him to go to hell. He fully expected Ashly to turn on her heel and leave the office. He was almost ready to resign himself to the fact that Ashly might not ever come back. Instead, Ashly closed and locked the office door and then stalked back over to Alex. "You'll do anything?" she asked, backing Alex up to the desk and then shoving him onto it.
