Alex feels exuberant with love and admiration , from head to toe, and curls his lips to kiss Ashly's finger . "Let's do that." Ashly was frowning at her phone. She typed out a message, thumbs flying, and then waited, fingers tapping the back of the couch impatiently. She is angry-really angry. They were supposed to be having family time. Alex was on the floor with Adom and a bucket of blocks , building towers so that Adom could gleefully knock them down.

But fifteen minutes ago, Ashly's phone buzzed, and she'd been on the couch texting ever since. Adom didn't seem to have noticed. He was having fun, so Alex stayed and played with him, but he couldn't help giving Ashly the occasional concerned glance. ---- "Quit that," Ashly said, absently , the fourth or fifth time Alex did it. He stretched to reach a couple of blocks that had skidded across the floor on impact and started on a new tower. "No, it's just-" Ashly cut herself off with a frustrated sound. She typed rapidly for a moment before speaking again. "It's just Allen and Sebestian being nosy, as always. I swear Alex and Sebestian are as bad as Allen, even more so. She keeps behaving like my father. Sometimes I want to kick her ass, but then I think about my best friend." "Ah," Alex said.

To be fair, he wasn't exactly sure what that meant. He could tell, from the way that they'd acted the last few weeks, that the two of them were fairly protective of Ashly, like Ashly was their ---- adoptive child or something . It was clear they were close friends. Obviously, they were worried about Ashly, and Alex found he couldn't blame them. He hadn't really given any of them any reason to trust him lately. Allen really hates him.

Alex was actually shocked that Allen didn't beat the shite on him, but then again, it doesn't matter. They are all grown up now, and Allen and Sebestian keep hating him, and they don't trust him.
