---- Flashback About the Monika and Sam relationship before their breakup: Monika knows her mate is shy and reserved by nature; she knows this. Even Sam expresses his feelings in an equally quiet way, preferring to show his love through his actions and touches rather than words. He loves Monika so much and for so long that he guards his love so jealously, so closely to his heart.

He has loved Monika from afar, through his loneliness and tears, and from the quietest corners of his desolated heart; so, in a sense, this love is sometimes his even more than it is Monika. Of course , he's not going to be able to just say it casually. He also doesn't know how to put it into words most of the time. No words in this world can describe the magnitude of his love, his adoration, his fondness, and his devotion to his monika.

It's impossible for him to say it all, so he shows it instead. Besides, he likes taking care of Monika, making sure that Monika eats well and sleeps well, leaning against Monika, holding her hands, and playing with her hair. When he does tell Monika his feelings, it's small and ---- private. He writes them for Monika with ink and paper and tugs the letters into Monika's book or laptop.

He texts them to Monika in the morning and at night before they go to sleep to ensure that Monika knows he's loved and thought of. He whispers his love into the minute space between their lips like it's the secret of the universe ; he presses them against the expanse of Monika's soft, supple skin and sings them in the privacy of their own space, where only they exist. Sam's love for his mate is exclusive; it's only for Monika to know and experience. But his Monika isn't like that.

Monika is very verbal with her feelings. Very loud. She did spend a good minute shouting her confession at the top of her lungs for all the girls who try to flirt with Sam to hear, after all. And Sam comes to understand that it's just one of the many ways that Monika expresses her feelings and devotion towards him. "You're attracting too much attention." Sam is still confused. "You're my boyfriend," Monika explains.

"I don't want other people staring at you." "Most of them know I'm your boyfriend ," he quips back, his stomach fluttering uncontrollably. "Well, there are some who don't, so you should be uglier." ---- "I thought you liked the fact that I'm handsome." "T don't like you for your face. I like you for how happy you make me feel; your face's just a bonus that comes with you being you," Monika says matter - of- fact, and Sam's heart flips in his chest.

His knees are going weak, and he might actually swoon if he's standing. Monika continues, "Be uglier , so people stop staring at you." Sam is silent for quite a while, his ears ringing. "Are you jealous?" It's Monika's turn to blush, and then she frowns like an angry cat. Definitely jealous, then. Sam suppresses asmile, feeling smug.

"Sam," Monika squints her eyes and holds her spoon threateningly, "you're lucky I like you." Sam snorts, his cheeks aching from smiling too much, and slides his feet across the table so he can tangle his legs with Monika. It takes quite a while for Sam to stop blushing and sputtering every time Monika verbally reaffirms her affection, but he gets there eventually.
