---- 52. ANGEL My eyes darted around the house as the woman led us into the living room. It reminded me so much of home that for a moment I felt an extreme longing to go back. But that feeling faded the moment Lucas squeezed my hand. "T'm s-sorry for the mess," she apologized as she removed toys and blankets from the couch. "Please havea seat." I glanced up at Lucas. He nodded and waited for me to take a seat before he sat down.

"Tl get you something hot to drink, you must be cold." She hurried away before we could utter a word. "Tm so nervous," I whispered. Placing his hand on my knee, he squeezed it gently. I bit my lip, eyes darting around the living room. There was a wooden box in one corner with little handprints painted on them. The floor in front of the box was littered with toys. My eyes darted over to the other couch where there were more toys, blankets, and some baby things.

The coffee table had been pushed against one wall, ---- leaving the space in the middle open. I leaned forward and picked up the blue teddy bear. My fingertips traced over the name embroidered on the bear's foot. "T had a teddy when I was little," I told Lucas softly. " It went everywhere with me. When mom died, I was taken into foster care-" "What's that?" Lucas questioned. I looked at him.

"It's a home that kids who lost their parents or who have no parents or other relatives stay until they find new families for them." "Oh." "some kids are really lucky to find new families who love them. I wasn't that lucky. Anyway...there was this one kid. She was a bully to everyone. She took my teddy and I never saw it again. It was the only thing I had left that my mom gave me." "Pm sorry." I shrugged, giving him a sad smile.

"It's part of life." The woman entered the room, carrying a tray that was shaking badly in her hands. Lucas instantly stood and took the tray from her. I took one of the cups when he held it out to me. "Thank you." ---- "Tm sorry about the mess," the woman apologized again. "If I had known you were coming, I would have cleaned a little." "There's no need to apologize," I told her, smiling at her. "This is what a house looks like when you have kids." She smiled at me.

"Do you have any?" Colour flooded my cheeks. I didn't dare look at Lucas even though I could feel his eyes burning into the side of my face. "J don't, but I grew up around a lot of kids. There's always a mess." Silence settled around us. Lucas didn't make a move to start a conversation. In the next room, I could hear Xavier and the other man placing the boxes down. Placing the cup down, I hesitated a few seconds before I stood and took a seat next to her.

I reached out to take her hand and waited until she looked up at me. "Pm sorry for your loss," I said softly. "I know how hard it can be to lose someone very close to you. Sorry isn't going to make the pain go away but I'm hoping that the few things I got for you will make things a little easier for you." She blinked, making her tears spill over. In the next moment, a sob escaped.
