---- 76. MASON I was aching to go check on Angel, but I needed to do my duty first. Despite the dishonorable way they came in, we managed to take them out. Some men had been captured after they surrendered, but a lot of lives had been lost. The families needed to be informed and funerals planned. And to top all that off, we needed to make sure that there would be no more attacks. A lot of our people had been injured, including Lucas.
We healed fast when it wasn't a fatal blow but the last time I saw him a few seconds ago, he was still bleeding. Angel was probably worried about us, and I knew that she was going to hover over Lucas until he was healed completely. The urge to go check on her was nearly overwhelming , but I forced my mind away from her and did my best to focus on what needed to be done. I knew Xavier would protect her with his life. What if someone managed to slip around us and killed him?

What if our mate was in danger and we weren't aware of it? ---- Those questions had me abandoning my duties and hurrying into the castle. I took a shortcut to our wing of the castle and made my way into Lucas's office. However, my steps faltered slightly when I entered it. My heart began racing as I took in the mess of the room. The secret tunnel behind the bookshelf was no longer hidden. I pulled out my sword and slowly crept forward with my heart dropping to my stomach.
The tunnel was empty but the door to the safe room was wide open. Despair hit. My mind was racing with images of how I would find our mate in a puddle of her own blood. But there was no sign of her. I sucked in deep breaths, trying to filter the scents filling the room. Xavier's smell was easily recognized, but I couldn't smell Angel at all. It was like she was never inside the room. Whoever took her could have used a masking spell. That thought instantly made me think of Maurice.
Storming out of the room and into the tunnel, I tracked Xavier and found him in the hall a few feet from the office. He was leaning against the wall, heavily injured. ---- Blood coated his clothes and covered the floor around him. Dropping to my knees next to him, I reached out and pressed a finger to his neck. He stirred, eyes opening and blinking a few times. "Mason," he rasped. "Where is she?" I growled , gripping his shoulder . " Who took her? How long ago? What direction did they go in?
Did you recognize any of them?" Xavier gripped my arm with a bloody hand. "Safe," he rasped. I frowned at him. "Where is she?" He swallowed loudly a few times, blood coating his lips. Muttering a curse, I pulled off the armor from my arm and used the tip of a claw to cut the fleshy part of my arm. Moving next to him, I pressed my arm against his lips. "Drink," I ordered. He swallowed my blood until the wound healed.
Moving away from him, I pulled his hand away from the wound and carefully lifted his shirt to get a look at it. It was already starting to heal.
