Chapter 68

---- the portal was. Everyone had been told to clear the area immediately. There were still a few people lingering around. My eyes lingered on one particular group. Women stood in a half circle around a crying woman who sat on the floor with a baby nursing in her arms. My heart constricted. Duty forced me to walk over there and promise her that we were going to bring her son back, but I couldn't do it. I couldn't make promises when I already knew how things were going to end.

She might even end up losing her husband but at least she had supportive friends. The ethical thing to do would be to offer to go myself, but I couldn't do that knowing that I would never see my mate again. Just thinking about her made me want to see her. I ached to touch her, to have her close. To breathe in her smell and assure myself that she was still okay. I stood to the side watching as Mason tied one end of a rope to each of the guard's waists and then to Charl's.

He paused to mutter some reassuring words to him before he turned his attention to the guards. Lucas was crouched in front of the woman, with his hand on the baby's head as he talked softly to her. The ---- woman nodded even though she was still crying. It was why Lucas made such a good King. He did what needed to be done without second - guessing things. He always placed his people first, and that was something I never would have done if I had been crowned king that day.

With one last reassuring smile, Lucas got up and walked over to me. For a few seconds, we stood in silence. "1'm going back to the castle," I told him. "Keep your phone on in case we need you." He squeezed my shoulder and then walked away. I lingered for a few more seconds before I headed back to my car. I ordered the driver to take me back to the castle. My eyes stayed glued to the window as we drove, but I wasn't really seeing anything. My mind had drifted to Angel.

Had she suffered when she came through the portal? I had felt the raised scars on her back whenever we had sex and I had seen it. Whenever I asked about it, she instantly changed the subject. Or had she gotten those scars on Earth? She never mentioned anything about being abused. Just the daily struggles of a human her age, and the hardships she faced when her mother died. ---- Unless she had lied about some things. "Shall I take the private entrance, sir?" I blinked.

"Yes." The moment the car stopped, I was out and hurrying towards the entrance. I needed to talk to Angel. I needed to know if she got hurt when she went through the portal. I knocked on her bedroom door and waited but there was no reply. Frowning, I entered, my eyes automatically darting around to locate her. When I didn't find her, I searched Mason's room and then mine. I knew she wouldn't be in Lucas's room so I searched for the only other place I could think of her being.

She wasn't in the library. Had Mother done something to her? Had Arabella ? Had she heard about the portals and decided to find her way home again? With my earth beating erratically in my chest and fear settling deep inside me, I hurried through the castle, calling out her name. "Sir!" someone called. I stopped and spun around. ---- "Are you looking for Angel?" "Have you seen her? Where is she?" I questioned. The girl swallowed. "I saw her slipping out the back.

She was heading in the direction of the creek." Thurried off. What was she thinking ? It was cold outside , fucking freezing. More snow was expected to fall, and she was out going for a walk. She would freeze to death before she even made it to the creek!
