---- Lucas swooped down, making my stomach drop along with us. His feet hit the ground, and his big body lowered to the ground. Mason was at our side in seconds, reaching for me. I wrapped myself around him as he lifted me off Lucas's back. Wrapping his arms around me, he hugged me tightly and buried his face against the crook of my neck. "Sneaky ," he breathed. "I nearly had a heart attack." I frowned, jerking back to look at him. "What?" "TJ felt you," he said softly.
"But I didn't know what was happening so I kind of freaked out a little. Maurice told me to let you in, but I had no idea what he was talking about." His chest vibrated against mine when he growled. "He fucking knocked me out." My lips twitched. It was kind of hard to imagine Maurice knocking him out. They were the same height, but Mason had a lot more muscle on him. "You think it's funny?" My smile widened.
"It's just hard to imagine Maurice knocking you out." "Wish I could have seen it as well." I turned to look at Nate. His lips were twitching but he didn't smile. My eyes darted past him to Lucas. He had changed back to his human form, but he just ---- stood there. Freeing myself from Mason's hold, I made my way over to him. He raised his head slightly , red-rimmed eyes locking with mine. The pain I saw in his eyes tore at my heart. Stepping forward , I pressed a hand to his cheek.

He leaned into my hand, letting out a shuddering breath. "Lucas." Tears filled his eyes. "Just hold me." "T have you," I whispered. Lucas hesitated a moment before he jerked me against his body. My legs wrapped around his hips when he picked me up. I wrapped one arm around his neck and slipped my other hand into his hair. "Tt's okay. I got you." He sucked in another shuddering breath but could feel his tears wetting my skin. Questions hovered on the tip of my tongue, but I didn't voice them.
He needed me. "Let's go inside," Nate said softly. "It's getting cool." Lucas spun and without a word, he started walking. I raised my head to look at my other mates. Nate caught my eyes for a few seconds before he looked away, but Mason held my gaze until I lowered my face. ---- Had we lost a lot of people? Were there more problems brewing? Were they unable to do something about the portals? Our footsteps echoed around the hall breaking the silence that hung between us.
The castle itself was strangely deadly silent. There were usually servants busy cleaning or doing whatever they usually did, but we didn't run into any of them. A door creaked open. Lucas entered the room and slammed it shut behind us, leaving his brothers outside. However, they didn't enter the room. My hold on Lucas tightened when he suddenly started lowering me. He laid me down on the bed and pulled away. "T need a shower. Don't leave." I watched him hurry into the bathroom with a frown.
My frown deepened when he closed the door firmly behind him. I was planning on joining him, but it was clear that he didn't want me to. Letting out a sigh, I stood and started pacing. What weren't they telling me? What were they hiding? Why were they so sad? It wasn't long before the bathroom door opened, and Lucas stepped out of the bathroom with a towel wrapped around his hips. He looked a lot more ---- composed , but his eyes were redder like he had been crying.
"Lucas?" He sucked in a breath and slowly blew it out. " Mother's dead. I killed her."
